Practical Rules
1) When a good stock falls down with apparently no news, that's the right moment to buy it. 2) "When the market brings you lemons, make a lemonade" (That is monetize your profits). [Benjamin Graham] 3) When there is an unexpected problem with your company, don't simply ignore it: remember it could be only the top of the iceberg. 4) If captains are leaving the boat, it can be the signal that things will not go as expected: do not immolate yourself with it. 5) Be honest when you are wrong: recognize your mistakes and cut them. Remember best investors are right only 60% of the times

Legendary investor Benjamin Graham in his book “The Intelligent Investor” has stated that stocks become more risky when prices are high and less risky when prices are low. This we know is also true for all our purchases. Goods and services are less attractive when prices are high and more attractive when prices are low. However while investing in equity markets we sell our stocks when prices are falling (low) and when they are rising we feel safe to invest.

Since it is difficult to see future, we take shelter in past to predict future. It is like driving the car by only looking into rear view mirror. Rear view mirror only reflects the road, which has already been traveled. The reason we consider an investor speculator when he invest after markets have fallen is because we are referring our judgment on past events. The same is true when we refer to someone as an investor after markets have risen. However we all know that “past performance may or may not be repeated” – To drive ahead we need to look in front and not in rear view mirror.
It is common sense that to earn good returns we need to buy low and sell high. This also means sailing against the tide. Buy when everyone is selling and sell when everyone is buying. This strategy is called contrarian strategy.
Sir John Templeton says it requires courage to be contrarian is because as human beings we prefer being with the crowd. We are not comfortable being seen opposite the crowd. When we are on opposite side of the crowd whole world can see us. We feel that if we make mistake then crowd will laugh at us. On the other hand if we are with the crowd and even if our strategy goes wrong nobody will laugh as everybody would have gone wrong. Finally ending with one more quote from Benjamin Graham “Individuals who cannot master their emotions are ill-suited to profit from the investment process”.

STORY OF THE DAY

Once while Vishnu and Brahma were quarrelling about which of them was superior to the other, Shiva, in the form of a column of light, appeared beside them. The column seemed to have no beginning or end, stretching upwards and downwards as far as the eye could see. The two gods decided that whoever found the top or the bottom of the column first would be deemed to be superior to the other.
So they set out, Vishnu in the form of a boar, and Brahma in the form of a swan. Vishnu descended for aeons together, but could not find the base of the column, and finally gave up the search. Brahma, soaring upwards, was equally unsuccessful in reaching the top. He saw a ketaki flower wafting down, and catching it, returned to the starting point where Vishnu was waiting for him.

Then followed a spot of duplicity. Brahma, claiming success, waved the flower, which he said he had found at the summit, in Vishnu’s face. Vishnu doubted his claim. He asked the ketaki if what Brahma said was true. The flower said it was.
The barefaced lie infuriated Shiva, and he cursed the flower (another version says the flower refused to substantiate Brahma’s claim and that it was Brahma who cursed it). The ketaki, till then considered the best among flowers, lost its importance and was never again offered in worship except on Mahashivratri when it makes a shy appearance.

nifty

We have see today a wonderful buying by FII And Indian mutual funds see the nifty again on winning spree we advised to buy nifty at 5768 level today in ur paid web remember we are also giving good tips i here for retail in vester also today iam posting all about NETWORK --18 NOW

Raghav Bahl,MD, Network 18 informs that it has been a very buoyant revenue growth for the television channels and for the Internet properties. He adds that YoY, there has been growth of over 65-70% in revenue terms and profitability.

Excerpts from the exclusive interview with Raghav Bahl:

Q: Could you break down the performance in terms of news business and Internet business?

A: Network 18 is the holding company and the operating businesses actually are in the two other listed companies, TV18 and GBN. For TV18, which essentially comprises of the business news channels, the Internet businesses and business news terminal, it has been an extraordinary quarter of buoyancy in revenue, in fact, it has exceeded our internal expectations as well. It has been a very buoyant revenue growth for the television channels and extremely buoyant revenue growth for the Internet properties, even NewsWire, which is only a 6-month old property, has shown very strong revenue growth.

So, I think YoY, we have grown over 65-70% in revenue terms and profitability. It has been a strong QoQ growth and I think the business news businesses have exhibited extremely strong buoyancy.

Our general news properties are in GBN and those have exhibited very strong YoY growth as well. The English news channel has put on almost 70-80% in revenue terms whereas the Hindi channel that is IBN7 has done over 50% revenue growth. So, I think all businesses have posted 50-150% of revenue buoyancy. That has really been the extraordinary thing for us this quarter.

Q: If you look at the numbers, it is the web business which shackled the results last time and this time too, we had a net loss there of about Rs 8 crore. For the web business it comprises a series of different web portals, how does it look going ahead from here, in terms of profitability and could we be looking at separating that business from TV18?

A: The business is already separate; it is already in a separate company Web18, but we've published consolidated results for our shareholders to get a completely clear sense of where the group is, so the business is in a separate company.

Web18, infact we believe, is the real sort of embedded value within the group, because it’s a very strong internet company and across our properties, we did nearly 250 or 300 million page views across various portals and that puts us right at the cutting edge of internet groups in India

To understand Web18, one has to look at 2-3 different things. It's not just one portal, it is a collection of many. Some of the older ones like moneycontrol.com, cricketnext.com, ibnlive.com, bookmyshow, commodititescontrol - all these are either very profitable or have entered profitability.

So bulk of these entities are making money and something like moneycontrol.com is making very good money. It is the newer portals that we are investing in, where you will see the investment losses being racked up, but that is part of our plan; we do intend to invest very aggressively in the web.

Q: Could we be looking at a separate listing for this entity while the different components in it go through their growth phases?

A: Absolutely and this is something we have told our shareholders before as well that at the right time, we will be unlocking the value of Web18. From whatever information and feedback we have from the financial markets and other experts in that area, it is an extremely valuable property and we will at the correct time be looking at unlocking the values and that correct time may not be that far away.

Q: Could you also talk about Newswire 18 because that on a QoQ basis has shown a jump in revenues? Also if you could sum up the Network 18 Fincap business with its various components- Homeshop 18, Studio18 and the films pipeline that we have in that segment?

A: What you have laid out are the new businesses that the group has gotten into. Newswire 18 is news terminal business, it’s really just finished its second quarter of operations and as we have done Rs 2.5 crore of revenues so that’s running ahead of our expectations.

As far as Homeshop 18 is concerned, that’s pretty much in the same phase actually. It is also a 7-8 month old business but do remember that the television channel is not even been launched. It is currently a virtual TV channel because we are using spots of about 50-70 a day across our various networks but we are seeing 100% month-on month growth in the billings of that network and do remember again Homeshop is not just a TV channel. It is actually a full scale retail media company which runs a call center and has logistics support operations. I believe we have now started delivering in over 1,500 cities and almost nearly 30,000 orders have been executed by that company.

The entertainment businesses are ready to takeoff and those investments are being made via GBN. We do believe that all regulatory approvals for the joint venture with Viacom are now available with us or will be available in the next few days and as we have declared in our FIPB application, we have to make USD 50 million infusion into the company which we are prepared to make immediately and as soon as that infusion is done, we become 50% shareholders of Viacom 18 and will have a 50% stake in MTV, Nickelodeon, VH1 and soon to be launched general entrainment channel.

Q: The reason I brought up Network18 is because as a stock we have seen quite a bit of underperformance by the market over the last few months. Would you elucidate a little bit more on the structure the company has at this point and what would be the key drivers for each of the segments going forward because it seems like the market at this point is a bit confused about the stock’s performance?

A: Well, markets will do what markets have to do. So, as a management, we leave stock market performance to the markets. The kind of growth that Network18 as the holding company of all media assets of the Group is posting must be a remarkable growth. We have had a 20% QoQ revenue growth and I think that is remarkable. We have gone from a Rs 96 crore topline in Q1 to Rs 116-117 crore topline and I think this quarter, and from the looks of it, the momentum seems to be maintained for the next quarter as well as we are sitting virtually in the middle of the current quarter.

So, that is really a company that holds all our media assets and it is exhibiting great growth. In terms of its bottomline, do remember that from TV18, it gets a very strong bottomline because that is its oldest and most mature asset. From GBN, it is beginning to get the first signs of bottomline. But it is also investing in newer businesses like HomeShop18. So, to that extent, the bottomline will always have these two competing influences on it in the next few quarters. The existing business is throwing lots of cash, and profit, while the newer businesses are taking time to mature. But as an entity, we believe it is the fastest growing and the most diversified media company in the country.

Story of the day

A Dog's Daughters

While Anusha was staying with her grandmother, she was expected to do certain chores. Anusha's grandmother did not believe in spoiling children. Washing the dishes was the main chore Anusha was expected to do, and Anusha hated it! The kitchen didn't have hot water, so washing dishes entailed boiling water first. One day Anusha felt that she'd had enough. There wasn't even a dishwasher or hot water in this kitchen! She thought it was ridiculous that her grandmother and most of the people in the village were behind the times.

"Unmachi (meaning grandmother in Tamil), I can't believe you people do dishes this way! You are so behind!"

A mixed look of hurt and anger flashed in Unmachi's eyes. Anusha's harsh words had stung, and immediately she felt terrible for her outburst. Before she even had the chance to apologize, Unmachi had something to say.

"You've been in America too long, Anusha, and you have forgotten where you came from. You need to remember that you not just American, but Indian too. Never be ashamed of where you came from. Sit down, and I'll tell you a story that my grandmother used to tell me."

Anusha sat. Unmachi's stories were always good.

Don't ask me how, I've long since forgotten, but a long time ago, a common dog got pregnant. But she didn't have puppies like most dogs do. Instead, the dog gave birth to two beautiful little girls.

The dog wasn't very creative with people names, so she named her girls Big Honnie and Little Honnie. The dog didn't want the people in the village to steal her girls, so she hid them in the forest and raised them there.

The two beautiful little girls grew up to be two beautiful young women. One day while their mother had gone to get food, two young men stumbled upon the cave the girls lived in with their mother. The men fell in love with the girls at once and took them home to be their brides.

Little Honnie was enchanted with her suitor, but she didn't want her mother to worry. She quietly left a trail with pieces of her sari as they walked through the forest to their new home.

Big Honnie was different. She didn't care one thing about her mother the dog! In fact, she was very ashamed that her mother was a dog instead of a human. She resented her mother for not giving her to the villagers when she was a baby so that she could live a more normal, privileged life. As far as she was concerned, she was an orphan.

The dog followed the trail Little Honnie left behind and first arrived at Little Honnie's house. Little Honnie was so happy to see her mother! She gave her a big feast and a big comfortable bed to sleep in that night. The next morning, she directed her mother to Big Honnie's house so that she could visit her as well.

Big Honnie was disgusted and ashamed when she saw her mother. How dare she show up in her new house! What if someone found out who she really was? Big Honnie beat her poor mother to death with a stick like she would do a common stray dog.

Little Honnie cried and cried when her sister told her what she had done. She took her mother's body and took it home, where she put it in a box. Finally, her husband could stand it no more when he saw her fussing over the box every day.

He demanded she open it. Little Honnie could not disobey her new husband. She would just tell him the truth. When she opened the box, her mother wasn't there. Instead, there was a key and a map.

"What's that to?" her husband asked.

Little Honnie didn't know! She lied and said it was the key to her mother's house. She told her husband her mother had died and left them her home in the forest.

The next day, map in hand, Little Honnie and her husband went to the forest. Little Honnie honestly didn't know what kind of dwelling they might find. Amazingly, they came to a clearing, and in that clearing, there was a beautiful palace!

Even more amazingly, the key fit the lock to the door perfectly. Little Honnie and her husband decided this would be their new home. But first, they had to go back to tell her sister about what her mother had left her.

When Big Honnie heard the news, she was so jealous! She wanted a big palace too. Big Honnie killed a stray she found in her village and put it in a box. Her maid didn't know why she had a dead dog, and she threw it out the next day because of the smell without telling Big Honnie. When Big Honnie opened the box a few days later, it was empty, except for a poisonous spider that had made its home there. The spider bit Big Honnie's hand when she put it in the box. Big Honnie died the next day.

Anusha was a little confused.

"So you're saying I'll die if I continue to be ashamed of where my family comes from?" she asked.

Unmachi smiled.

"No, darling," she said. "Of course that's just a metaphor. But I am saying, you are who you are. This village and your family in India are a part of you just like your family and home back in America. Don't ever be ashamed of either one. Both have made you the person you are today."

This made sense to Anusa. She decided that she would try not to complain the next time her grandmother asked her to do the tedious chore of washing dishes.

Author's note:

My reframing included the story about Anusha and her grandmother. The original was a straightforward tale so there was no introduction where someone was telling the story to another person.

I did not tell how the dog got pregnant with babies in my story. In the original, women in the village prayed to have children, and were given fruit that supposedly would make them pregnant. The women ate the fruit and the dog ate the seeds that they threw out. As a result, the women got pregnant and gave birth to puppies, while the dog gave birth to babies. I thought that was irrelevent so I left it out.

I left the names in the story the same, because I thought it was rather fitting that a dog would not give its children normal names like a human mother would. On things I added, I mostly just embellished on the feelings and thoughts of the characters. The original didn't really get into what Big Honnie and Little Honnie were thinking. Their actions just more or less explained their attitudes towards their mother.

In the original story, Big Honnie finds nothing in the box, but goes out with her husband into the forest in hopes of finding a palace too. She is bit by a snake when she stops to use the bathroom, and that is how she dies. The snake is Little Honnie's friend; instead of having a map in the original story, she finds a snake in the forest who guides her to the palace.
There were several little details I changed throughout the story, but the premise was still the same.

I chose this story because I thought it was a good example of why you should never be ashamed of who you really are.

HCL Tech to invest Rs 1,000cr in technology hub
BS Reporter / November 01, 2007
New Delhi-based IT software development and services provider HCL Technologies is set to invest Rs 1,000 crore in its new technology hub, which was inaugurated today. The company expects the new facility to generate over $1 billion from software exports annually, and is targeting a 30% growth in revenues over the next five years.

The company is also setting up two units in Chennai and Bangalore, which will be inaugurated in the second half of the current financial year. The Chennai facility will be built on similar lines as the Nodia facility, and will be able to accomodate 15,000 people. The Bangalore facility will be about one-third the size. "The Bangalore facility will cater to our financial services, Chennai will be our hub for life sciences, while our Noida unit is to develop our core technologies," said HCL Tech CEO Vineet Nayar.

HCL also has plans to set up units in tier-II cities like Nagpur, Madurai and Lucknow. The latter two, which will cater to undisclosed new micro-verticals for the company, are expected to be inaugurated by the end of 2009. No time frame has been disclosed for the Lucknow unit, but it is expected to start beyond 2010.

The company is also exploring the option of setting up global hubs. It is planning to establish one such hub in the US by next month. "We might even take over other firms' technology facilities. To begin with, the hubs would be able to accomodate around 1,000 people," said HCL Tech founder and chairman Shiv Nadar.

story of the day

krishna was a very poor boy. He lived in the village with his mother. His father was dead. When Krishna was five-year-old, his mother sent him to school.

The road seemed very long. Krishna thought he had lost his way. He went on and on, till he saw the other village boys going to school. He joined them, and at last reached school.

He had a happy time at school. When lessons were over, he played games with the other boys. It was almost dark when he set out for home.

It was a long way back to home. It grew darker and darker. Krishna was very much afraid. He did not know what to do. So he began to run, and he did not rest till he was in his mother's arms.

Next morning Krishna told his mother that he did not want to go to school. "But," said his mother, "You had a happy time at school yesterday, my child, and learnt many beautiful things! You said you loved your lessons. Why do you not wish to go to school today?"

"I love school and my lessons, mother," replied, "but I am afraid to go alone through the woods, they are thick and dark."

The poor mother stood for a minute, thinking what to say. She was very poor to send anyone with her son to school. At once the name of lord Krishna came to her mind. So she said to Krishna: "You don't know, my child, their lives in these woods another son of mine who is always there near the path. Whenever you are afraid, call out Him, 'O Cowboy Brother, come with me to school!' He will come at once and take care of you, and then you will not be afraid.""

And Krishna said, "Is it really true, mother, that my Brother, the Cowboy, will come to take care of me on my way to school?"

"Yes, it is true, my boy," said the mother, "He loves you as a brother does, and will never fail to come to your help when you call out to Him."

So Krishna set out like a brave boy. But he had not gone very far when he began to feel afraid. So he called out, "O Brother Cowboy, Brother Cowboy, come and play with me!"

A Boy appeared out of the tree, took the child's hand, and led him to school. When they came near the school, He parted from him, saying: "Call Me again on your way back to home."

Every day, Krishna, while going to and coming back from school, would call the Cowboy. They would play together all the way. The Cowboy was so kind and good that Krishna came to love Him as he had never loved anyone before.

And when, day after day, Krishna told his mother all about Him, she was not in the least surprised. She knew it was the Child Krishna who came to her son's help every day.

So time went on. Then one day the school master said:" tomorrow I want to give a feast . All of you, my boys, must bring presents."

So Krishna said to his mother that night, "Mother, our noble teacher is going to give a feast tomorrow. What should I take to him?"

the child's words made the mother very sad. She knew she was very poor and could not give anything to her little boy for his teacher. But at the same time she did not want her son to give no present to his Master.

So she said to him, "My boy, I am too poor to give you anything for your teacher. But, while going to school in the morning, ask your Brother to give you something." She knew that the child Krishna would help them.

So in the morning Krishna said to the Cowboy: "O Brother, my teacher is going to give a feast today. All the boys will be bringing presents. It will look so bad if I give him no present. I am too poor to give anything. Will you, give me something foe my Master?"

"What can I give you, O brother? What am I but a poor Cowboy? Here is a little bowl of milk. That's all I can give you, Krishna. It is only a poor Cowboy's present. But you must give it to your teacher, "said the Cowboy.

Krishna went to his master's house with the present. He waited behind a crowd of boys who were handing over what they had brought.

Krishna waited a long time, but no one saw him. The poor boy became very sad. At last the teacher happened to look at him. He took the small bowl of milk from his hands and went to empty it into a big pan. But great was his wonder when the little bowl filled up again. Again he tried to empty it, and again the little bowl was full. And so he went on emptying it again and again, but still the little bowl was full.

All those present there wondered what it meant. Krishna also wondered. He now understood for the first time that the Cowboy Brother was no other than the Child Krishna Himself.

The teacher asked him, "From where did you get this milk?" Krishna replied, "From my Brother, the Cowboy Brother, who lives in the woods."

"Who is He?" asked the teacher.

"One who comes and play with me on my way to school," replied Krishna.

"Can you show me your Brother in the woods?"

"Yes, if you come along with me, Sir."

So in the evening the teacher and Krishna went together to the place. When they got there, Krishna called: "Cowboy Brother! Brother Cowboy! Won't you come?" but no Cowboy appeared. Krishna did not know what to do. He called and called, but there was no answer.

At last the boy, full of grief, cried, "O Brother Cowboy, if You do not appear, they will think I do not tell the truth."

Then came a sound, as it were, from the deep woods, which seemed to say, "No, my little brother, I cannot show my face to your master. He still has long way to wait."

story of the day

Eklavya

Near the ashrama of Drona, where Arjuna and his brothers used to take lessons in various arts, there lived a small bright boy, shudra by caste (lower caste). His name was Eklavya. He had great desire to learn the art of archery from Dronacharya. But his mother had told him that as a shudra, Acharya Drona would not accept Eklavya as his disciple. It was futile to dream of such a privilege.

But the boy was not be put off, his determination knew no bounds. Near his house, under a tree Eklavya installed a clay idol of Dronacharya that he worshiped as his Guru! Daily, morning and evening, this devotee put flower and natural perfumes in front of this image and took Self-Lessons in the art of bow and arrow. The talented young Eklavya soon acquired high knowledge in archery. He attributed his success to his Guru Dronacharya.

One day, as it happened, Acharya Drona and Arjuna were passing near the hut of Eklavya. It was pleasant and peaceful afternoon and people were taking rest. But the tranquility and silence was broken by constant barking of a dog. Eklavya did not like this, and therefore, he shut the mouth of the dog with an arrow! Dronacharya and Arjuna were surprised to see the dog with his mouth sealed with an arrow!

Naturally the curious Arjuna asked his Gurudev as to who could have done this delicate job. Even Dronacharya was amazed and knew the archer must be exceptionally skilled artist. They decided to trace this skillful fellow and reached the spot where Eklavya was practicing wonders with his bow and arrow in front of the clay image of Drona. It took no time for Dronacharya to understand the situation. He realized that Eklavya was superior to Arjuna in some respects. Dronacharya loved Arjuna very much and had declared him to be the best archer on the earth. Hence the Guru thought for awhile and came to a decision to remove Eklavya as a competitor to Arjuna.

Dronacharya went to Eklavya and said, "O young man, who has taught you such wonderful skills in archery! Who is your Guru?"

Seeing the Guru in front of him, the boy Eklavya was more that overjoyed and said, "Why, O Gurudev, this all is your grace! I worship you as my Guru. Look you are there in that image!"

Dronacharya was pleased with the dedication of Eklavya, and said, "I bless you my son. But as is customary, won't you give me my fees - Guru-Dakshina!"

[It is customary in India to give to the Guru whatever he demands as his fees - Guru-Dakshina for the knowledge the Guru has given to the disciple.]

Eklavya was overwhelmed to see Dronacharya had accepted him as his disciple! Out he said, "O Honorable Teacher, whatever you ask, this humble disciple of yours will try his utmost to offer you as Guru-Dakshina! I am blessed."

And now comes a very touching and pathetic incidence in Mahabharata.

Guru Drona said, "O Eklavya, I am pleased with your respect for Guru. I want the thumb of your right hand as my fees – Guru-Dakshina."

The trees and atmosphere around stood still for a minute! Even Arjuna was stunned on listening to the unusual and almost cruel demand of his Guru. To ask for the thumb of an archer was equivalent to almost kill him! How could Dronacharya demand such a heavy prize from one disciple to protect the honor of the other!

But Eklavya had no such remorse. Unruffled and with due humility, cheerfully and without protest, he cut his right thumb and placed at the feet of Dronacharya. Gods in the heaven silently praised the greatness of Eklavya's sacrifice.

RBI Governor YV Reddy announced the credit policy today. CRR has been hiked by 50 bps to 7.5% from 5%. However, the other key rates including the repo and reverse repo rates have remained unchanged. Only one analyst saw the repo rate rising in the next five months.

"RBI could wait and watch how the capital inflows pan out. If the flows are not strong enough, the system could move from being liquidity surplus to liquidity deficit," Abheek Barua, chief economist with HDFC Bank, said.

Barua said excess cash could also fluctuate as seasonal withdrawals from banks rose, lowering funds in the system.
"Liquidity management will continue to receive a greater attention in view of the easing U.S. monetary policy," Shubhada Rao, chief economist with Yes Bank, said.

Rao expected lower U.S. interest rates to heighten the monetary challenges for the RBI, as this could send more capital into India.

The Federal Reserve makes its next decision on Wednesday. Since the U.S. central bank's last rate cut in September, foreign funds have poured about $7.7 billion into Indian stocks.

STORY OF THE DAY
NOW in a certain place there lived a Brahman named Haridatta. He was a farmer, but poor was the return his labour brought him. One day, at the end of the hot hours, the Brahman, overcome by the heat, lay down under the shadow of a tree to have a doze. Suddenly he saw a great hooded snake creeping out of an ant-hill near at hand. So he thought to himself, "Sure this is the guardian deity of the field, and I have not ever worshipped it. That's why my farming is in vain. I will at once go and pay my respects to it."

When he had made up his mind, he got some milk, poured it into a bowl, and went to the ant-hill, and said aloud: "O Guardian of this Field! all this while I did not know that you dwelt here. That is why I have not yet paid my respects to you; pray forgive me." And he laid the milk down and went to his house.

Next morning he came and looked, and he saw a gold denar in the bowl, and from that time onward every day the same thing occurred: he gave milk to the serpent and found a gold denar.

One day the Brahman had to go to the village, and so be ordered his son to take the milk to the ant-hill. The son brought the milk, put it down, and went back home. Next day he went again and found a denar, so he thought to himself: "This ant-hill is surely full of golden denars; I'll kill the serpent, and take them all for myself."

So next day, while he was giving the milk to the serpent, the Brahman's son struck it on the head with a cudgel. But the serpent escaped death by the will of fate, and in a rage bit the Brahman's son with its sharp fangs, and he fell down dead at once. His people raised him a funeral pyre not far from the field and burnt him to ashes.

Two days afterwards his father came back, and when he learnt his son's fate he grieved and mourned. But after a time, be took the bowl of milk, went to the ant-hill, and praised the serpent with a loud voice. After a long, long time the serpent appeared, but only with its head out of the opening of the ant-hill, and spoke to the Brahman: "'Tis greed that brings you here, and makes you even forget the loss of your son. From this time forward friendship between us is impossible. Your son struck me in youthful ignorance, and I have bitten him to death. How can I forget the blow with the cudgel ? And how can you forget the pain and grief at the loss of your son?"

So speaking, it gave the Brahman a costly pearl and disappeared. But before it went away it said: "Come back no more."

The Brahman took the pearl, and went back home, cursing the folly of his son

STORY OF THE DAY

In the next few weeks I will tell you two stories, Aruni and Uttanka. These stories are taken from Mahabharata that illustrate the special relationship that ought to exist between the teacher (guru) and disciple (shishya). In these stories, the faith of the student in his teacher is matched by the teacher's perception of his pupil's abilities.

Aruni of Panchala was a dedicated student of the ancient sage Dhoumya. In the days of yore, a student had to stay with the teacher and help in the teacher’s daily chores in order to receive the knowledge he sought.

It was a day of cold winter. Aruni was carrying the firewood he had collected for the sage's household. As he was passing by a field, which belonged to the sage, he noticed a breach in the embankment that was holding water in his teacher's field. He realized that the water would seep away and the field’s crops would die with no water.

"What should I do? If I stop to build the embankment I will be delayed and there is no firewood at the hermitage to keep the place warm. I better rush to the hermitage with the firewood and then come back to take care of the breach."

Meanwhile the sage and his disciples had assembled for the day's lesson. Aruni was missing.

Soon Aruni rushed in, dropped the firewood in the courtyard, and informed the teacher about the breach of the embankment. Then he quickly rushed out.

Sage Dhoumya felt proud of his disciple, "It is hard to get such a responsible disciple."

Aruni ran all the way back to the troubled spot and tried to stop the leakage of water by putting some logs and mud. However, this did not stop the leak. The heavy pressure of water washed away the dam Aruni made. He felt helpless. It seemed impossible for him to stop the leakage without help. He thought for a while and then made a plan.

It was getting dark and the teacher became worried. He called his disciples and set out looking for Aruni. As he called out for Aruni, he heard a faint voice, "Here I am master!"

The teacher and his disciples rushed to the spot and saw Aruni lying on the breach, in order to hold the water in the field. The disciples quickly pulled Aruni out from the freezing water. He was repeatedly muttering, "The water is flowing out, the crops will die ---."

"Don't worry Aruni! We will take care of the breach," said the disciples.

"Never mind my son! You are more precious than the crop," said the teacher.

Aruni was covered in a blanket and brought home. Sage Dhoumya himself tended to Aruni. The sage then blessed his disciple with pride, "You shall, forever, be renowned for your unmatched devotion and obedience to your guru.
